Becoming God's vessel is really about becoming the person he's calling you to be, not just doing what he asks of you. That means handing over your plans, your desires, your five-year plan, your comfort zone—all of it—and letting him shape your character instead of clinging to your own.
Paul tells Timothy that if we cleanse ourselves, we'll be "a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the master's use, prepared for every good work" (2 Timothy 2:21). That's the goal. Not perfect; just cleaned out, available, and ready when God needs us.
It's going to cost you something
Being a vessel means being willing to take risks for God's kingdom. Sometimes, he'll ask you to step out in faith before you feel ready. He might push you to speak up when you would rather remain silent, serve when no one is watching, or go in a direction that doesn't make sense to the people around you.
And once you say yes to that? Get ready to be stretched in ways you didn't see coming. You'll be pruned, corrected, refined. There'll be seasons of waiting, seasons of uncertainty, and seasons when God seems to be working silently behind the scenes. (And let's be honest—those silent seasons will want to drive you insane!)
There'll be moments when your emotions will be all over the place. You may experience anxiety, stress, disappointment, frustration. You'll wonder if you actually heard God right or if you're even capable of doing what he has called you to do.
But d'you know the greatest part? Through all of it, you will GROW.
You'll grow in patience. You'll grow in wisdom. You'll grow in humility. You'll grow in confidence. And you'll begin to trust him in ways you never thought possible.
Every delay, every hard lesson, every act of obedience when it would've been easier to say no—all of it is part of his process of preparing you for what lies ahead, even when you can't see the plan. Just like gold gets refined by fire, God often uses the hard seasons to build our character, strengthen our faith, and deepen how much we actually rely on him.
God isn't looking for perfect. He's looking for willing.
As you walk with him, you'll also discover that God isn't looking for perfect people; he's looking for willing hearts. Throughout the Bible, he used ordinary men and women who simply said "yes" to him, and that yes was all it took for him to do extraordinary things through them.
Remember Isaiah? When God asked, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Isaiah didn't have a resume ready. He didn't wait until he felt qualified. He just said, "Here am I; send me" (Isaiah 6:8). That's the only qualification God is looking for—our willingness.
When you let God use you, you're putting your life in his hands and saying, "I'm available." I can assure you that the life he has planned for you is so much bigger than anything you could build on your own. There's no better place to stand than right in the center of his will.
So stop waiting until you feel ready. Stop waiting until you 'have things figured out'. He's not waiting for you to feel qualified. He's waiting for your yes.
The journey won't always be easy, but it'll always be worth it.
