Why you should guard your eye gates

Do you know that what you look at matters way more than most of us want to admit?

Our eyes are gates to our soul and spirit. Every single thing you let through them walks straight into your mind, your heart, your spirit—and it doesn't just pass through and leave. It settles in.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:22: "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light." That means what we continually look at has an impact on us. The things we consume through our eyes influence our thoughts and eventually affect our actions.

So, friend, what have you been letting in lately?

We're not just watching; we're absorbing

What movies are we watching? What are we exposing ourselves to day after day? What are you scrolling through at 11 p.m. when nobody's checking on you?

Because all of that adds up and begins to shape you. Slowly and silently, without asking for permission. Your thoughts start leaning a certain way. Things the world has normalized that used to bother you no longer does. And eventually, it all starts showing up in how you actually live.

That’s why we must be intentional about what we allow into our hearts and lives. Proverbs 4:23 tells us to "guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." We are also called to stay alert at all times in 1 Peter 5:8—"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour."

The enemy rarely works in obvious ways. He looks for subtle opportunities to influence our thinking and draw our hearts away from God. If he cannot gain access through one avenue, he will try another—through entertaining content that appear harmless.

Think about what you watch on TV. Violence, sexual content, magic, sorcery, and other ungodly entertainment are harmful to the soul! Sometimes we convince ourselves that it's not a problem because we skip certain scenes or fast-forward certain parts. I used to think this way myself—I'd fast-forward certain parts of a show or movie I was uncomfortable with and tell myself it was okay.

But honestly? If you regularly feel the need to skip portions of what you're watching, it may be worth asking whether you should be watching it in the first place.

The same applies to social media. The accounts we follow. The feeds we scroll on continuously without thinking twice. It's all training our thinking, our desires, our default attitude towards life, one scroll at a time.

And books count, too. What are we actually filling your imagination with? Fiction, non-fiction, doesn't matter —some material can fill our minds with so much unnecessary and ungodly content that, over time, it begins to affect how we think, speak, and behave. Our minds absorb what we repeatedly expose them to. That's just how it works.

Be wise about what you let in

Friends, take a closer look at what you're letting in on a daily basis. What you're watching, what you're reading, the people you follow online—are they all pointing you toward wisdom and truth, or just filling your head with noise?

Let's fill our eyes with things that are beneficial and uplifting. It doesn’t mean we must only watch sermons, Christian films, or preaching videos. It just means what we consume should have a positive influence in our lives and not pull us away from God.

Before you watch a movie or show, read the summary. Read the movie blurb or the show description. Find out the ratings. What does the cover of the movie say? What does it look like? Use discernment when seeking entertainment, because the devil does not play. In these last days, almost every form of entertainment carries some influence of the demonic.

If a certain show, movie, or type of content leaves you unsettled—if it stirs up thoughts you don't want, or puts distance between you and God—just walk away from it! When you're watching whatever you're watching, you're letting things into your home, not just into your heart. So just walk away, friend. You won't be any worse off because you stopped watching a particular show or movie. You don't need anyone else's approval to protect your peace.

Also, some individuals are more sensitive spiritually. Certain content can hit them harder and stir things up inside them that other people might not normally notice. If you're someone who feels emotions very strongly or who's walking closely in prophetic gifts, pay attention to that. Use wisdom and discernment when selecting what to watch or read.

When you start being selective about what you let through those eye gates, some things begin to change. Your heart grows lighter, your mind becomes clearer, and the voice of God becomes stronger and clearer for you.

Be careful and intentional with your eye gates. Guard them like they matter, because they do.
